Toyota Motor has announced plans to increase the pay of its U.S. factory workers by 9% and reduce the time to reach maximum pay.

Toyota will increase pay for most assembly plant workers from $31.86 an hour to $34.80 an hour, starting Jan 1, a company spokesman told the Wall Street Journal.

The automaker also plans to give the same wage increase to hourly employees at its spare-parts facilities and logistics warehouses, marking the third increase this year for those workers, the paper reported.

Toyota typically reviews wages for workers in the spring and the fall of each year. This year, there were two increases in the fall. The automaker increased the hourly wage by 25 cents for the same group of workers in September, the Wall Street Journal indicated.

Toyota said it's also reducing the time for hourly employees to reach maximum pay from eight years to four, according to the article.

The United Auto Workers won pay increases for its union-represented members in tentative agreements with General Motors, Ford Motor and Stellantis and has said it plans to try to organize workers at nonunion automakers, which include Toyota and Tesla.
