Kia recalled more than 137,000 cars and subcompact SUVs over risk of engine damage and potential fire.

The U.S. division of the South Korean automaker estimates that just 1% of the recalled 2021 to 2023 Soul cars and Seltos subcompact SUVs have the problem, which stems from incorrectly made piston oil rings from a supplier.

The part flaw has led in some cases to engine damage when the piston ring has scored the cylinder wall, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Telltale signs a vehicle has the problem include increased oil consumption, engine noise, and illumination of the oil pressure warning light. Extended driving of a vehicle with the issue can result in engine damage and loss of power, and fire can occur from oil leakage.

Kia said it was aware of no crashes or injuries related to the damaged part but that there had been four potentially related fires.

Dealers will inspect the vehicles’ engines, replacing them if needed, and install piston ring noise-sensing software. Kia plans to mail recall notices to owners on April 4.
