Hyundai recalled more than 42,000 vehicles across two models over a wiring flaw that can potentially lead to rollaways.

The console extension wiring assembly near the transmission shift lever in the 2025 Tuscon SUV and Santa Fe pickup may be incorrectly routed, creating the potential for contacting the shift lever lock mechanical release, according to a recall notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. If such contact occurs, the vehicles can be put into gear without applying the brakes.

The South Korean automaker addressed the wiring assembly issue at its Alabama plant last month, according to the notice. For vehicles affected by the earlier error, it recommends drivers engage the parking brake when parking them until they’re repaired.

Dealers will reroute the wiring assembly and reimburse owners for any earlier repairs. Hyundai, which said it’s unaware of any crashes related to the issue, is scheduled to mail recall notices on Jan. 19.
