The Chrysler division of Stellantis recalled more than 21,000 SUVs in the U.S. market due to the possibility that their brake pedals could collapse during braking.

The parent company said in a statement that it was aware of 15 cases of the problem, including one accident with no injuries.

A recall report on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website indicates compromised brake pedal assemblies are suspected to have entered the production process in July 2023 and continued being incorporated through this past July.

Chrysler recalled the 2024 and 2025 plug-in hybrid Dodge Hornet and Alfa Romeo Tonale SUVs. Dealers will reinforce the brake pedal arm with a nut and bolt.

Until the vehicles are repaired, owners can engage and hold the electronic emergency brake while driving slowly to bring the vehicle to a stop if the brake pedal fails to work, advised Stellantis, which said the vehicles’ automatic emergency braking, if turned on, would engage if a collision were about to happen.

Recall notices are scheduled to be mailed to owners on Oct. 24. Stellantis said about 2,500 additional vehicles are affected in Canada and Mexico, along with an estimated 35,000 outside North America.
