Nissan recalled about 444,000 vehicles due to a flaw that could cause their engines to fail.

The Japanese automaker pinpointed engine bearing failures potentially stemming from manufacturing defects in the bearings or supporting components. The problem could lead to gradual engine failure. It estimates that just 1% of the vehicle population has the issue.

The recall affects 2021 to 2024 Rogues, 2019 to 2020 Altimas, 2019 to 2022 Infiniti QX50s and 2022 Infiniti QX55s with three-cylinder 1.5-liter or four-cylinder two-liter variable compression turbo engines.

If a vehicle experiences engine failure related to the issue, drivers should encounter multiple audible and visual warnings, among them engine compartment noise, rough running and dash warning lights and messages, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Repairs will hinge on the engine type. Dealers will inspect the engine oil plan for metallic debris, and repair or replace the engine as needed.

Nissan, which didn’t indicate whether any crashes or injuries have resulted from the issue, is scheduled to mail recall notices to owners on Aug. 25.
