WASHINGTON, DC – President Obama appointed Richard Cordray as director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau yesterday. Sharon Block, Terence F. Flynn and Richard Griffin also were appointed as members of the National Labor Relations Board.

Obama nominated Cordray last July, but the would-be CFPB leader had yet to be approved into the position by the Senate, which is currently in recess.

“The American people deserve to have qualified public servants fighting for them every day — whether it is to enforce new consumer protections or uphold the rights of working Americans,” Obama stated in a White House press release. “We can’t wait to act to strengthen the economy and restore security for our middle class and those trying to get in it, and that’s why I am proud to appoint these fine individuals to get to work for the American people.”

Cordray most recently served as head of the CFPB’s enforcement division, as well as attorney general of Ohio from January 2009 to January 2011. His experience includes two years as Ohio’s state treasurer and four as the treasurer of Franklin County, Ohio.
