Toyota recalled more than 443,000 Tundra pickups over potential backup light failure.

Moisture can enter the reverse  light assemblies of 2022 to 2025 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid trucks, potentially causing the lights to fail. Toyota is unsure how many units in the vehicle population have the flaw.

Each of the trucks’ two reverse light assemblies has a layered vent patch designed to keep out water, but the patch can separate from thermal cycling and thereby allow moisture intrusion, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The moisture can then corrode internal workings and cause reverse light failure, limiting the driver’s view when backing and failing to warn other drivers and pedestrians that the vehicle is moving in reverse.

Toyota dealers will replace both reverse light assemblies and repair their wire harnesses as needed. The Japanese automaker is scheduled to mail recall notices to owners on June 30.
