DEARBORN, Mich. — Ford's decision to idle production of its F-150 pickup last week has followed several months of slowing demand in retail and fleet channels and may point to a larger trend in pickup sales.
Pickup sales are expected to remain at near record levels and reach 2.19 million in 2016, which would be an increase from the 2.16 million pickups sold in 2015, according to LMC Automotive, J.D. Powers' market research unit. The forecaster expects pickup sales to return to 2.16 million by 2018.
