BMW has opened up to Android users its technology that allows drivers to unlock and start their vehicles with their cellphones.

It had previously made Digital Key Plus compatible only with Apple devices. Now those with certain Google or Samsung devices can use it.

The technology works even without drivers removing their devices from their pockets or bags.

Digital Key Plus is compatible with Samsung Galaxy S23+ and Ultra and Google Pixel 7 Pro phones, plus some older models, the German carmaker said in a press release.

Owners can program their BMWs to lock or unlock as they approach or walk away from them.

The ultra-wideband technology, a digital radio innovation, features “very precise localization” and all but eliminates the possibility of radio signals being jammed or intercepted, BMW said.

It can be set up using the BMW application and shared with up to five other people for access to a vehicle. Its Express Mode allows use without unlocking one’s phone.
