DETROIT — General Motors is investing $1 billion in its U.S. manufacturing operations and will move production of axles for its pickup trucks from Mexico, the company announced on the eve of President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration.

About 1,500 new and retained jobs are tied to the new investments, which cover new vehicle, advanced technology and component projects. Details of the projects will be announced throughout the year, according to GM.

The company will begin insourcing axle production for its next generation full-size pickup trucks, including work previously done in Mexico, to operations in Michigan, which wil create 450 U.S. jobs.

"As the U.S. manufacturing base increases its competitiveness, we are able to further increase our investment, resulting in more jobs for America and better results for our owners," said Mary Barra, GM's chairman and CEO. "The U.S. is our home market and we are committed to growth that is good for our employees, dealers, and suppliers and supports our continued effort to drive shareholder value."

In recent weeks, Trump has been using Twitter to praise U.S. companies announcing U.S. jobs. He indirectly referenced GM's move shortly after the company's announcement.

"With all of the jobs I am bringing back into the U.S. (even before taking office), with all of the new auto plants coming back into our country and with the massive cost reductions I have negotiated on military purchases and more," he wrote. "I believe the people are seeing 'big stuff.'"
